John Cusack
John Cusack
John Cusack will star in Roland Emmerich’s apocalyptic movie 2012 for Columbia Pictures. According to Variety, Chiwetel Ejiofor (Redbelt, American Gangster) is also in talks to join the movie.

Cusack is in talks to play divorced dad, writer and sometime limo driver Jackson Curtis, who goes on a heroic journey to save his family. Ejiofor plays Adrian Helmsley, an idealistic science adviser to the president who also becomes a hero.

The story is based on a Mayan prediction from over 2300 years ago that the apocalypse will come at the winter solstice in 2012. They plan to release the movie in July 2009…

Apparently Cusack as Curtis will open a portal into a parallel universe and make contact with his double in order to prevent an apocalypse predicted by the ancient Mayans. Hopefully the dimension he channels is one where Emmerich movies are actually decent.

When Emmerich shopped around the package deal back in February, he was claiming it would be made with a $200 budget. Columbia is saying it will be made for much less than that. Emmerich’s last epic movie, 10,000 B.C., was made for around $100 million and just about broke even at the domestic box office.

Roly Emmerich has plenty of experience with end of the world scenarios. He made Independence Day, Godzilla, and The Day After Tomorrow. I’m sure he’ll find a way to blow up the city.
