Cliches… Formulas… whatever terminology you like to call them by, there are certain repeated patterns in films that we’ve all seen a thousands times. Some of those Formulas are fine. For example, the mom who loves her kids… that’s not a stretch and we expect it in normal life, so we expect no less in a movie. However, there are other formulas in films that would have you and I believe they are the norm in real life… when they really aren’t. These can be fine too and not irritate us… but then there are these cliches that I really get sick off and wish more films would avoid. So now I present to you, in no particular order, the 8 things I’m sick of seeing in movies

I estimate that I’ve seen somewhere in the range of 1,500 movies, probably even more. However, there are always some that slip by. There’s actually a few movies that it seems everyone but me has seen. How I’ve managed to go this long without seeing them, I really don’t know. Sometimes it’s out of principle, in some cases it’s been lack of interest, and in others… well, everyone has seen it and has no interest in watching it with me. |

As I grew up, this crush evolved into a more than passing interest in historical sites and digs, slight proficiency with a bullwhip (although Batman Returns is in part to blame for that one) and a fondness for movies. Or so I thought. Because I just saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and realised something: despite my growing up into a well balanced historically interested bullwhip wielding movie buff, I am still very much in love with Indiana Jones. Indy IV (as the film will be lovingly called for the purpose of this review) has been a long time in the making. And throughout its final stages Spielberg, Lucas, et al. have been very secretive about the plot. |

The script for Supermax is still floating around waiting for a greenlight, but LatinoReview got a copy and wrote up what they thought about it. David S. Goyer, who adapted the story for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, wrote the unconventional comic book adaptation. Justin Marks, the guy who scripted the upcoming Voltron, helped out. It features the Green Arrow, but instead of plodding through another origin story, it throws him into a maximum security prison with many of his archenemies. Then he has to escape using his cunning tricks and bow skills. It’s Robin Hood meets FOX’s “Prison Break.” |

John Cusack will star in Roland Emmerich’s apocalyptic movie 2012 for Columbia Pictures. According to Variety, Chiwetel Ejiofor (Redbelt, American Gangster) is also in talks to join the movie. Cusack is in talks to play divorced dad, writer and sometime limo driver Jackson Curtis, who goes on a heroic journey to save his family. Ejiofor plays Adrian Helmsley, an idealistic science adviser to the president who also becomes a hero. The story is based on a Mayan prediction from over 2300 years ago that the apocalypse will come at the winter solstice in 2012. They plan to release the movie in July 2009… |
