The violent video game’s purpose was to “go postal” and kill enough people to advance to the next level. Boll’s movie incorporates President Bush and Osama bin Laden look-a-likes, Verne Troyer as himself, and jokes involving the 9/11 hjiackers…
The email quoted Boll as saying:
“Theatrical distributors are boycotting Postal because of its political content. We were prepared to open on 1,500 screens all across America on May 23, 2008. Any multiplex in the U.S. should have space for us, but they’re afraid.”
He went on to say “exhibitors should [not] censor what gets played in U.S. theaters.”
The movie has been scaled back to release on just five theaters in the States. It’ll still play in Chicago, New York, Denver, and Tuscon.
While Boll whines and complains about the political content, I’m sure the lack of screen time probably has more to do with his track record for making awful movies.
Postal opened in Germany (Boll’s home country) last year for four months and was only able to earn roughly $142,761. The theaters dropping his movie isn’t about the controversial “comedy” material, it’s a business decision to show movies that make money.
