The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe opened to $65 million in December 2005.
The PG-rated Disney movie failed to capitalize on being the only wide release this weekend, especially following a disastrous weekend for its only family competition, Speed Racer.
The first place opening is still the second largest weekend gross of 2008, but it was expected to surpass the original from early estimates and tracking numbers.
Your guess is as good as mine on why it underperformed, but the prevailing theory is parents avoided a much more violent, darker take on the series. I read one article that was stunned it was able to earn a PG rating from the MPAA with multiple severed limbs and intense battles.
It received virtually the same amount of positive reviews from critics, but possibly didn’t excite those who weren’t impressed with the original.
Iron Man stayed in second as predicted, but made another $31 million. It has made a massive total of $222.5 million already.
After the actual numbers came out last week, it was revealed Speed Racer did open behind What Happens in Vegas… Warner Bros has inflated the numbers for an easy win. But once the final figures were released and the two flip-flopped positions, it was even bigger news about its third place finish. This week Speed Racer ($7.6 mil) finished again behind Ashton Kutcher ($13.9 mil).
1. Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian $56.6 million
